Claudia Tenney, widely considered the most vulnerable among Republican U.S. Representatives, is in a dead heat with Democratic State Assemblyman Anthony Brindisi, according to the New York Times/Siena College poll released on Wednesday.
Brindisi holds a 46 to 45 percent advantage over freshman lawmaker and stalwart conservative Tenney, Times/Siena found. The remaining 9 percent are undecided. The margin of error is 4.7 points.
Although New York's 22nd District (Utica) has a hefty Republican registration edge and has been in GOP hands for all but four years since 1950, the same survey found Tenney’s hold on Republicans is far less secure than Brindisi's on Democrats. Where 77 percent of registered Democrats back Brindisi, NYT/Siena found only 65 percent of Republicans are committed to Tenney.
Elected two years ago with 44 percent of the vote, conservative swashbuckler Tenney has backed the Trump-supported American Health Care Act and the president’s tax cuts. She also has offered spirited defense of the Administration for everything from Housing Secretary Ben Carson’s purchase of new office furniture to the White House charges against fired FBI Director James Comey.
Trump, in turn, campaigned for Tenney in August and has since sent son Don, Jr. and daughter Ivanka to New York to stump for her.
