In January, John Kasich, one of the nation’s most high-profile “Never Trumpers,” will be succeeded as governor of Ohio by fellow Republican and pro-Trumper Mike DeWine.
DeWine, 71, state attorney general and former U.S. Senator, won a hard-fought race for the governorship by a margin of 51 to 47 percent over Democrat Richard Cordray. The two had clashed before in 2010, when Dewine became the Buckeye State’s top law enforcement official by unseating then-Attorney General Cordray.
Lame duck Gov. Kasich refused to endorse Trump for President in 2016 after Kasich’s unsuccessful bid for the White House.
In contrast, Dewine supported Trump in the fall of 2016. In this year’s campaign, he deployed numerous mailers featuring the President’s picture and urged voters to “thank President Trump” for the present economic prosperity by voting for Dewine for governor.
Along with electing Dewine governor, Ohio voters elected Republicans to all of the statewide elected offices except for the Senate (Democrat Sherrod Brown was re-elected) and two seats on the state Supreme Court that both went Democratic.
