Reprimanded by House colleagues over spending on his office and campaign, Republican Rep. David Schweikert is now in a fight for his political life in Arizona’s formerly-safe Republican Sixth District (suburban Phoenix).
Schweikert’s plight was spelled out graphically in a poll released Wednesday showing the five-term lawmaker barely edging Democrat and physician Dr. Hiral Tipirneni by 49 to 46 percent.
The poll was conducted by the Phoenix-based OH Predictive Insights.
“[Schweikert] is in the situation he is in primarily because the demographics of the sixth have changed to his detriment,” former State GOP Chairman Randy Pullen told Newsmax.
Two years ago, Democrat Anita Malik held conservative Stalwart to 55 per cent of the vote.
But pundits and pols on both sides agree that the 11 ethics charges — which involved the oversight of official office funds and his campaign kitty — have hurt Schweikert the most. Much of his campaign war chest was used on legal fees.
Four years ago, President Trump swept the 6th District by a margin of 52 to 42 percent over Hillary Clinton. OH Predictive Insights showed him eking out a lead over Joe Biden by 49 to 48 percent.
