Despite speculation that the Indianapolis suburbs in Indiana’s 5th District would turn Democrat this year with the retirement of moderate Republican Rep. Susan Brooks, conservative state Sen. Victoria Spartz kept the district in Republican hands.
By a margin of 51% to 46%, Spartz — who was born and raised in Ukraine and arrived in the U.S. at age 21 — defeated 2018 Democrat lieutenant governor nominee Christina Hale.
Throughout the campaign, Hale slammed Spartz for her conservative views on abortion and gun rights and raised questions about her lending her own campaign $1.27 million.
Spartz countered with a hard-hitting spot featuring her two daughters dismissing what they called “crazy” accusations against their mother and recalling that she came to the U.S. with all her worldly possessions “in a suitcase.”
Spartz won the Republican primary for Brooks’ seat over five opponents after running as an anti-establishment candidate in the style of President Donald Trump. Nevertheless, the disparate Republican factions came together to support her after she became the nominee.
