No Media Melodrama Like Hillary Clinton

Jon Friedman By Sunday, 09 March 2014 12:17 PM EDT Current | Bio | Archive

Presidential intrigue is always in season and never takes a day off. Sure, it is "only" 2014 now, but it is prime time for speculating about America's favorite obsession: Hillary Clinton.

Will she or won't she run?

A better question: Will she win?

Hillary has waited five-plus agonizing years to run again — and so has the United States media. That's right, darn it. What about us?

We have a lot at stake, too, you know. It boils down to one question: Will the media let Hillary lose?

Sometimes it seems hard to determine whether she or the assembled journalists are more gung-ho on her declaring her intention to run for the White House.

That's because we need to have her out there on the stump. We probably need her more than she needs us. Hillary spices up a presidential campaign. It's that simple. Whether voters love or loathe her, she is impossible to overlook. She is a classic lightning rod, about whom people have no middling opinions.

Think of the drama! The melodrama! The pathos! The bathos! The multitude of irresistible story angles that follow her around, wherever she goes and whatever she does.

Hillary surely has unfinished business to ponder. Remember, how, eight years ago, she looked like a heavy favorite to gain the Democratic nomination? Sure, this curious Illinois fellow Barack Obama was making noise and lurking as a highly attractive, charismatic, and winning contender. But Hillary had done it all, including paid her dues. How could she lose? Well, we know how that story turned out for her.

Love or leave her, she stirs people up, including the media. OK, I'll say it: We need her more than she needs us.
