I vividly remember April 15, 2013, as I left my office in Essex County, N.J. and headed to pick my daughter up from school. I was also planning to make a light dinner, as I expected to be sick to my stomach while digging into the day’s news at home. It is easy to forget now, in retrospect, that the Kermit Gosnell murder trial was in full swing in Philadelphia, Pa. and the Fox News program "The Five" was sending Co-Host Kimberly Guilfoyle there to cover the case that week.
I remember mentally preparing myself for what I expected to be a gruesome discovery of evidence. Images of body parts and dismembered fetuses were already flashing through my head. The case would unfortunately fail to have the impact on the national stream of consciousness that it should have due to the circumstances that would present themselves in Boston — as I was driving down the N.J. highway that fateful day.
I wondered how anyone could condone the horrific, legal abortion on demand being provided by soulless practitioners like Gosnell and abortion giant Planned Parenthood after the details of this case hit the mainstream.
As I arrived at the Marie V. Duffy Elementary School in Wharton, N.J. I turned on "The Sean Hannity Radio Show" and was overcome with anger and sadness as he reported the tragedy that was occurring during the annual Boston Marathon.
Dzhokhar Tsarnaev and Tamerlan Tsarnaev, Chechen brothers who were in the country on expired visas, constructed 2 pressure cooker bombs killing 3 civilians, injuring an estimated 264 others. At least 14 people required amputations and some suffered horrific traumatic amputations as a result of the blasts.
The fact that the bombing could even occur was another example of a massive failure by the Obama administration. We would later find out that the American intelligence community ignored warnings from the Russian government to monitor the activities of the Tsarnaev Brothers.
The news cycle shifted coverage from a high profile murder case that would challenge even the most ardent supporters of on demand abortion access, to what would turn into one of the most high profile manhunts in recent American history. The Chechen brothers killed a police officer, kidnapped a man in his car, and engaged in a shootout with the police in nearby Watertown, Mass., during which two officers were injured. One of those officers succumbed to injuries a year later. Tamerlan Tsarnaev was hit during the shootout, and after being run over as his brother got away in the stolen getaway car, died shortly thereafter.
The manhunt for Dzhokhar Tsarnaev ended around 6pm on April 19 2013. Law enforcement officers searching Watertown were tipped off by a resident who discovered Dzhokhar hiding in a boat in his backyard. He was shot by police while still in the boat and then arrested.
As the chaotic manhunt in Massachusetts was ending the Gosnell trial was marginalized into an afterthought by many. Most media outlets completely ignored the case, choosing to focus on the terrorist attack and not the eight counts of murder, 24 felony counts of performing illegal abortions beyond the state of Pennsylvania’s 24-week time limit and 227 misdemeanor counts of violating the 24-hour informed-consent law.
Also ignored by many was the death of an adult patient, Karnamaya Mongar, who died following an abortion procedure, as well as seven newborns said to have been murdered after being born alive during attempted abortions.
The American anti-abortion movement remains strong to this day, but a golden opportunity to drive home the abortion is murder message was itself aborted with a horrific act of terror in Boston.
