It's not overstating things to say that the nation's 46th commander in chief's handling of the situation in Afghanistan may be the worst foreign policy debacle of the last 100 years.
Following a deafening silence over the weekend from the administration, President Joe Biden took to the podium Monday afternoon to try and control the messaging around his team’s massive failure.
By that time it was already too late.
According to a new poll by Convention of States Action and the Trafalgar group released Monday morning, nearly 70% of all Americans believe Joe Biden has mishandled the situation in Afghanistan. This includes 89% of Republicans, 75% of Independents, and a plurality of Democrats at 48%.
Biden told the American people that the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan would be different from Saigon.
That part is true. It’s far worse.
We’ve already heard reports of the Taliban executing detainees, raping women, and forcing girls as young as 15 to marry terrorists.
Heartbreaking video emerged this week of Afghans desperately clinging to the fuselage of an Air Force transport plane; some held on long enough to fall to their deaths.
The passage of time will reveal the total number of casualties, but it’s obvious right now that Afghanistan will once again become a breeding and launching ground for global terrorism.
While Afghanistan falls, Biden has been busy twiddling his thumbs, casting blame.
The president initially indicated he wouldn’t address the crisis for a "few days," only to backtrack and move up his address to Monday afternoon (Aug. 16, 2021).
In his written statements, he’s blamed President Donald Trump for the Taliban’s rise to power, citing the peace talks between the Trump administration and the radical Islamist group.
Meanwhile, the President’s underlings have fumbled and stumbled their way to some of the most ludicrous claims imaginable.
In a briefing last week, White House press secretary Jen Psaki said the Taliban might lose their place in the "international community" if they continued their rampage across the country.
"The international community is going to watch closely how the Taliban behaves. They have a range of tools in their arsenal, as well, to take steps should they choose," Psaki said.
Reality check: the Taliban are 8th century cavemen who want to kill all non-Muslims and subjugate their own people under tyrannical rule.
The Taliban seeks to put women in bourkas, ban girls from attending school, torture and kill dissidents, and globally export their brand of terror mindset.
They don’t care one whit about their "role in the international community," and they certainly don’t care about whatever nonsensical sanctions Psaki may have in mind.
While Psaki is threatening the Taliban with sanctions, the rest of the Biden administration has resorted to begging and bribing.
The New York Times reported that our diplomats in Afghanistan were begging the Taliban not to burn down our embassy in Kabul, offering the prospect of foreign aid if the Taliban complied.
"Mr. Khalilzad [U.S. chief negotiator] is hoping to convince Taliban leaders that the embassy must remain open, and secure, if the group hopes to receive American financial aid and other assistance as part of a future Afghan government," the Times reported.
This is unspeakably insane. Why in God's name would we ever give foreign aid to the Taliban? In what universe would we treat a Taliban-controlled Afghanistan like any other foreign power?
Speaking of foreign powers, the Biden administration is so disconnected from reality that they can’t see how the Taliban’s rise benefits our country’s most dangerous enemies.
The Taliban has been in talks with China to form a partnership as U.S. presence in the region wanes, and yet U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken tried to spin our withdrawal as a bad thing for our enemies.
"It's also true that there's nothing that our strategic competitors around the world would like more than to see us bogged down in Afghanistan for another five, 10, or 20 years," he said.
You know what else China doesn’t want to see?
A relatively stable U.S. base of operations on China’s doorstep, which is what we had until Joe Biden came along.
The American people don’t believe Biden, Psaki, or Blinken.
They know this isn’t Trump’s fault, they know the Taliban won’t respond to diplomatic threats, and they know China is giddy with excitement at the American withdrawal.
Afghanistan is a catastrophe.
Biden knows it, his allies in the mainstream media know it, and the American people know it even better.
While Biden’s administration and the intelligence community breathlessly talked about alleged insurrection on Jan. 6 of this year and diverted budgets and manpower to chase down phantom domestic threats from so-called right wing nationalists, the real threat to America’s safety at home and abroad was growing under their noses — in Afghanistan.
But the "experts" in D.C. will never acknowledge their failures, because they never do.
They've been wrong repeatedly over and over in this administration, from COVID-19 to the economy and inflation, and now to epic weakness in foreign affairs, culminating in a complete, humiliating defeat in Afghanistan.
On each occasion they're wrong, they lie, obfuscate and manufacture a fake "crisis" to deflect from that which is obvious to the American people.
Our polling shows that the American people know that the Afghan disaster rests squarely with Team Biden.
And that was before the photos and videos of the pullout hit the internet.
Afghanistan will explode in violence, torture and abuse, of the sort we haven't witnessed in a decade. Our allies on the ground will pay dearly with their lives, much to our shame.
And while the administration asks that we avert our eyes from the unfolding catastrophe they've caused, at a minimum, we must have them wide open at home while remaining vigilant.
Count on Biden and his allies on the Left to hatch the next fake "crisis," targeting those who have the audacity to believe that America is still and should remain the land of the free and the brave.
