The World Economic Forum (WEF) got underway in Davos today, and the small Swiss town’s normal population has temporarily doubled with the usual parade of self-important delegates and world leaders, and the usual throng of high-priced call girls.

But there will be one difference this year — their main issue of concern.

They won’t be condemning the use of fossil fuel as they’re transported there and back by the usual thousands of private jet aircraft. Nor will they denounce meat consumption as they gorge on thick steaks and the juices run down their jowls.

Nope, this year the Number 1 societal risk confronting the planet over the next two years will be disinformation and misinformation, which can be defined as anything that doesn’t have the WEF’s seal of approval.

This is according 1,500 “experts” consulted by the WEF, which prompted an observation by statistician, writer, and poker player Nate Silver.

“If the experts think that misinformation is a bigger problem than war, then a way bigger problem than misinformation is that the experts are f***ing idiots,” he said.

Author Peter Foley had another thought.

“Is that because there are 40 major elections across the world this year and they don't want people to have access to real information?” he asked.

And one of those “major elections” is taking place right here in the United States, and President Biden is trying to control the information that gets out so he can hold on to his job.

Last month, for example, The Associated Press reported that “Biden goes into 2024 with the economy getting stronger,” then added this smidgen of honesty: “but voters feel horrible about it.”

It’s those very smidgens of truth that concern the White House.

When Biden was heading to Camp David for his Christmas holiday, he insisted to reporters that the economy was “all good.” He added that the problem was how it was being reported.

“Take a look,” he told reporters. “Start reporting it the right way.”

After the holidays the White House reportedly turned up the heat. They set up a meeting with political reporters and editors at the Biden campaign Wilmington, Del., headquarters to tell them what they’re getting wrong in their reporting, according to Semafor.

But the subjects discussed at the meeting weren’t limited to how to report the goings-on at the Biden administration.

They were also upset by “the coverage of former President Donald Trump, feeling that outlets are too focused on his legal troubles and haven't paid enough attention to some of his incendiary recent statements on the campaign trail.”

Then the White House staffers reportedly set up follow-up meetings with some of the major news outlets — including Fox.

Mollie Hemingway, editor-in-chief at The Federalist, called it a “privilege” of the party.

“Democrat privilege includes having corporate media 1000% in your pocket and being able to demand they turn up the propaganda even more. This is almost comical.”

“Almost comical,” yes, but more tragedy than comedy.

The free and independent press envisioned by the Founders and enshrined in the First Amendment to the Constitution is being turned into a state-run media, in which nothing gets reported to the public except that which first receives party approval.

The press is designed to be the government’s fiercest watchdog — not the party’s most compliant lapdog.

And the World Economic Forum made it clear that a free and independent press is their greatest fear and enemy, simply by making “disinformation” their Number 1 societal risk.

The correct response to bad speech is more speech — not less.

If the WEF, the Biden White House, or the Democrat Party believe something is being reported inaccurately, the correct response is to debate the issue — not to silence the other party.

Despite browbeating the media, reporting hasn’t all gone Biden’s way.

"You've got the best economy of any economy in the world right now,” he complained over the weekend. “And that literally is true, but people turn on the television and what do you hear? Everything's negative! Even the good stuff ends up negative! And a lot of it is negative!"

The president and the WEF won’t be satisfied until we attain that dystopian society envisioned by George Orwell, where “every record has been destroyed or falsified, every book rewritten, every picture has been repainted, every statue and street building has been renamed, every date has been altered.”

In such a world, “History has stopped. Nothing exists except an endless present in which the Party is always right.”

We can’t let that happen.
