President Donald Trump’s supporters have settled on a strategy to undermine former Vice President Joe Biden’s campaign for president: equate him with former nominee Hillary Clinton, The Atlantic reports.

In 2016, Trump and his allies hit Clinton heavily over her record in Washington, painting her as an ineffectual D.C.-insider who’s working to uphold the status quo, a strategy they hope to repeat with Biden, the current frontrunner for the Democratic nomination.

"The notion that [Biden is] arguing for the status quo is a little hard when the status quo is Donald Trump,” an anonymous Biden adviser told the Atlantic. “What he’s advocating for is a pretty radical change from what we have.”

“Trump’s sweet spot is where he’s running as an indictment against politicians of both parties,” Jason Miller, the communications director for Trump’s 2016 campaign, told the Atlantic.

He added that although Trump is the incumbent, “Biden being in the race allows him to be the change agent, allows him to be the reformer.”

Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., an old friend of Biden’s who is now one of Trump’s most prominent defenders, agreed with Miller’s assessment.

“I think the president believes that Joe Biden represents the old way of doing business that was pretty soundly rejected, and that it would be going backwards,” Graham said. “I think President Trump believes that Joe Biden, in [former President Barack] Obama’s time, created malaise and lack of economic opportunity and the weakness that led to Trump being elected.”
