Former special counsel Robert Mueller has said his testimony to Congress will stick to what was in his 448-page report — but President Donald Trump on Tuesday said he is more concerned about who will be sitting next to Mueller.
Democrats on the House Judiciary Committee granted Mueller's request to have his top aide in the investigation of Russia meddling in the 2016 election, Aaron Zebley, sit at the table with him Wednesday.
Zebley is not expected to be sworn in for questioning, the Associated Press reported.
Trump lodged an all-cap complaint about the addition.
The president tweeted:
"Just got back only to hear of a last minute change allowing a Never Trumper attorney to help Robert Mueller with his testimony before Congress tomorrow.
What a disgrace to our system. Never heard of this before. VERY UNFAIR, SHOULD NOT BE ALLOWED. A rigged Witch Hunt!"
Zebley worked as Mueller's chief of staff at the FBI as well as working on the special counsel's team. While many on Mueller's team gave political donations to Democrat candidates, records show Zebley has no political donation history, The Washington Post reported.
"Aaron Zebley was the Deputy Special Counsel and had day-to-day oversight of the investigations conducted by the Office," Mueller's spokesman for appearance on Capitol Hill, Jim Popkin told Talking Points Memo. "He will accompany Special Counsel Mueller to the Wednesday hearings, as was discussed with the committees more than a week ago."
According to the Post, two Mueller aides have already canceled plans to testify with the special counsel amid pressure from Department of Justice officials.
The DOJ also "objects" to Zebley's potential appearance, according to the Post.
Trump returned to the subject three hours later, pointing to a connection between the lawyer and Trump's 2016 Democrat challenger for the White House, Hillary Clinton, tweeting:
"So Robert Mueller has now asked for his long time Never Trumper lawyer to sit beside him and help with answers. What’s this all about? His lawyer represented the “basement server guy” who got off free in the Crooked Hillary case. This should NOT be allowed. Rigged Witch Hunt!"
