Abraham Foxman, national director emeritus for the Anti-Defamation League, said it was "outrageous" for President Donald Trump to say Jews who vote for Democrats are disloyal.
Trump made his claim after Democratic Reps. Rashida Tlaib of Michigan and Ilhan Omar of Minnesota were blocked from visiting Israel because they support a boycott of the country over treatment of Palestinians.
"Any Jewish people that vote for a Democrat — I think it shows either a total lack of knowledge or great disloyalty," Trump said Tuesday.
But Foxman, who retired as ADL director in 2015, countered with a tweet Tuesday:
"POTUS telling American Jews that we lack knowledge and are disloyal is outrageous! Percy and Buchanan's anti-Israel bias did not make the Republicans anti-Israel nor does the anti-Israel venom of Omar and Tlaib make the Democrats anti-Israel. And who would we be disloyal to?"
In Foxman's tweet, "Percy" and "Buchanan" apparently referred to the late Sen. Charles Percy, R-Ill., and Patrick Buchanan.
Last week, Foxman tweeted that Israel should allow both lawmakers to visit.
He wrote: "As difficult as the visit of the two congress members to Israel would be-Israel should permit it-because it is Israel, a democracy, a close ally of the USA and a country that values unity but also difference. I hope the Israeli government reconsiders again!"
