Schiff: Acting DNI Has Not Yet Produced Whistleblower

By    |   Tuesday, 17 September 2019 12:14 PM EDT

House Judiciary Committee Adam Schiff said Tuesday his committee has still not spoken to a whistleblower demanded through a subpoena to acting Director of National Intelligence Joseph McGuire that the person's complaints be submitted to congressional intelligence panels.

"We have not spoken directly with the whistleblower, but we would like to," the California Democrat told MSNBC's "Morning Joe." "The risk for the whistleblower is retaliation.

Will the whistleblower be protected under the statute if the offices that are supposed to come to his assistance and provide the mechanism are unwilling do so? But we would love to talk directly with the whistleblower."

Schiff said he's limited about what he can say about the whistleblower, as the person's complaints have not been released.

"We do know from the inspector general that the subject matter relates to an intelligence activity that is not just a concern, but an urgent concern that it deals with serious or flagrant abuse, and that's really all that is necessary to provide that complaint to Congress," said Schiff. "The practice since the establishment of this office, inspector general and the other offices, even had they think there it's not credible they still provide it to Congress. That's been the unbroken practice since the beginning of that office until now."

Schiff said there is confirmation that the whistleblower's complaint is "credible," and that suggests that during the 14-day investigation done by the inspector general, "they uncovered other witnesses or evidence that helped to affirm what this whistleblower is expecting."

Schiff also discussed the attacks on Saudi oil fields, saying he'll get more classified information later today but it is "certainly fair to attribute at least the technical know-how to the Iranians."

"Now we need to be working with our allies to figure out how to contain this Iranian action in the region, whatever their role was in this attack," said Schiff.
