Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula has released an audio recording in which its leader Qassim al-Rimi mocks President Donald Trump and says the American raid against his terrorist group killed 25 people, including 11 women and children, AP reported.
Al-Rimi told his followers in the recording that "The White House's new fool has received a painful blow at your hands in his first outing on your land," claiming that scores of U.S. soldiers were killed or wounded.
The authenticity of the recording could not be verified, although the voice was similar to that of previous recordings by al-Rimi, according to AP.
The U.S. military says Navy SEAL, Chief Petty Officer William "Ryan" Owens, was killed and four other American troops were wounded in the operation.
Democratic congressmen have called for an investigation into the raid, which some members of the armed forces said was conducted without sufficient intelligence, ground support or adequate backup operations, The Hill reported.
Rep. Ted Lieu said he was “highly disturbed” by the reports that the mission was approved without full intelligence, emphasizing Trump’s previous criticism of the intelligence community.
“Given this context, the lingering questions surrounding the Yemen mission are deeply troubling and they demand answers,” he said. “I have requested a briefing on this counterterrorism operation from the Department of Defense.”
Rep. Ruben Gallego wrote to the House Armed Services Committee chairman demanding “an urgent briefing from the Department of Defense and the administration on the planning and execution of this mission, as well as on the decision-making process that preceded its approval.”
