Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-NY., on Tuesday announced her endorsement of Jessica Cisneros, who is challenging Texas Rep. Henry Cuellar in the Democratic primary.
“The people of South Texas deserve a Democrat like Jessica who is going to fight for real people, not big corporate donors like the Koch Brothers, GEO Group, and Exxon,” Ocasio-Cortez said in a statement released by the Cisneros campaign, according to The Hill.
“When Jessica is elected, not only will I no longer be the youngest person in Congress — I’ll have a strong new ally in the fight for Medicare for All, getting corporate money out of politics, and fixing our broken immigration system,” the congresswoman added.
Cisneros, a 26-year-old immigration and human rights attorney from the town of Laredo, said in the announcement that she is “honored” to have the support of Ocasio-Cortez, who successfully ran her own primary challenge against longtime Democratic Rep. Joseph Crowley of New York.
Cuellar has been in Congress since 2005, and has become a major target for the liberal advocacy group Justice Democrats, who worked with Ocasio-Cortez on her campaign.
“Our opponent continues to focus on out-of-state endorsements, but we are squarely focused on continuing to build support in the district,” Cueller campaign spokesperson Colin Strother told The Hill.
“The strength of our campaign is that we are powered by the working people of the 28th District of Texas, not celebrities. Those are the people that will decide this election.”
