President Donald Trump’s attacks on Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y. and three other progressive Democratic congresswomen appear to be a key part of his 2020 campaign arsenal.
CBS News is reporting that unlike some Republicans, who may see his attacks on Ocasio-Cortez, and Reps. Ilhan Omar of Minnesota, Ayanna Pressley of Massachusetts and Rashida Tlaib of Michigan as just a one-off, Trump is convinced that his continued criticism of them helps him.
GOP pollster Neil Newhouse says 64% of Republicans have a negative view of Ocasio-Cortez. Focus groups with swing voters see her as the ideological leader of the Democratic Party.
“This is essentially Trump doubling down on the strategy he thinks is going to pay off, to get his base energized and out to vote and to appeal to some of those voters in the middle," Newhouse is quoted by CBS News.
And Trump’s 2020 campaign national press secretary Kayleigh McEnany joined in on the president’s criticism of the congresswomen on Monday.
"Look at these congresswomen, and by the way he never listed out who he was talking about we can guess who a few of them are, but look at the anti-Semitic remarks that have been made by Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib and AOC," McEnany said on Fox News Radio's "Todd Starnes Show.”
Trump was asked on Monday if he was concerned that some viewed his comments about the congresswomen as racist.
"It doesn't concern me because many people agree with me," Trump said.
