Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., said Friday at a rally in Maryland that she and the other progressive Democrats who have recently been elected to Congress “will not go back,” The Independent reports.
Ocasio-Cortez didn’t refer to President Donald Trump, who had recently attacked her and her fellow congresswomen on Twitter, but her words echo the chant heard at a recent Trump rally.
“It has taken us 240 years to have this unique composite in the congress, in this moment, and we will not go back,” she told the over 700 attendants of the rally to benefit Democracy Summer, a program that trains young Democratic activists. “We will not go back to the days of injustice. We will not go back, we will go forward. But we sure as hell will not stand still.”
Rep. Jamie Raskin, D-Md., who started the program about 10 years ago, said before the event that his fundraisers for the program don’t usually draw such large crowds.
“Usually I’m the attraction, which tells you about our comparative popular appeal,” he said.
“It has been a kind of crazy week, hasn’t it?” Ocasio-Cortez said at the start of her remarks.
“America has always been the story of those fighting to advance the rights of others,” she said. “And some, clinging to the past, to preserve the rights of a few.”
