Former CBS News anchor Dan Rather is praising the Associated Press' decision to call the alt-right movement racist.

John Daniszewski, the AP's vice president for standards, penned a piece that appeared on the news wire's website Monday. In it, he describes the AP's standards regarding the alt-right political movement.

"The 'alt-right' or 'alternative right' is a name currently embraced by some white supremacists and white nationalists to refer to themselves and their ideology, which emphasizes preserving and protecting the white race in the United States in addition to, or over, other traditional conservative positions such as limited government, low taxes and strict law-and-order," Daniszewski wrote.

"The movement has been described as a mix of racism, white nationalism and populism."

Daniszewski added, "Its members reject the American democratic ideal that all should have equality under the law regardless of creed, gender, ethnic origin or race."

Rather liked what he saw. He commented on the piece via his Facebook page:

Democrat Hillary Clinton, who lost the presidential election to Trump, called the alt-right a "hate movement" during her campaign in August.

Trump disavowed the alt-right during a question and answer session with The New York Times last week.

"I don't want to energize the group, and I disavow the group," Trump said. "It's not a group I want to energize, and if they are energized, I want to look into it and find out why."
