Retail giant Amazon announced Tuesday that it will split its new headquarters between New York City and Northern Virginia, CNN reports.

The Wall Street Journal reported the decision Monday night, citing unnamed sources.

The pick of Amazon's second and third headquarters ends more than a yearlong public contest that started with 238 candidates and ended with a surprise split of its so-called HQ2.

Other cities might also receive major sites, the Journal reported.
