Americans' attitudes toward Muslims and the religion of Islam have improved since last fall, according to the results of a new poll taken after the Orlando terror attack.

The Brookings Institution numbers show an increase since last November, with 62 percent of people holding a favorable view of Muslims — up from 53 percent in November.

The favorability rating of Islam has gone up from 37 percent to 44 percent.

The most recent poll was taken in the days following Orlando, during which a Muslim killed 49 people at a nightclub.

Other key findings from the poll:
  • Republican support for Muslims went up one point from November to June, 41 percent to 42 percent.
  • Democrats' support for Muslims increased from 67 percent to 79 percent in that timeframe.
  • Republicans' support for Islam fell from 26 percent to 24 percent, but among Democrats it rose from 51 percent to 64 percent.
  • Overall, 64 percent of those surveyed think Islam and western religions are compatible.
  • To prevent future attacks like Orlando, 25 percent said banning the sale of weapons to people on terrorist/criminal watch groups is necessary.
