Sen. Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., in a speech on the Senate floor Monday warned of consequences if Amy Coney Barrett is confirmed as a Supreme Court justice.
Barrett was expected to be approved to the Supreme Court later Monday, one week before Election Day.
"The fact is that our Republican colleagues are shattering the norms and breaking the rules and breaking their word, and there will be consequences," Blumenthal said. "There inevitably are consequences when one person breaks his or her word to another."
The Senate has rushed to confirm President Donald Trump's nominee since Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg died in late September.
Trump's choice to fill the vacancy potentially opens a new era of rulings on abortion, the Affordable Care Act, and even a possible dispute over his own election.
Blumenthal called the process "sad, surreal, even shocking."
"Eight days away from an election in an unprecedented rush to confirm a Supreme Court nominee, we are taking the place of the next president and the next Senate in confirming the next judge even as the American people are denied a voice and a say in that decision."
