New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo continues to hold a strong lead over actress Cynthia Nixon in the Democratic primary for New York governor in a Siena College poll, The New York Times reported.

In the poll:

  • 60 percent favor Cuomo.
  • 29 percent favor Nixon.

Breaking down the results, Cuomo outdoes Nixon in every region, racial group, age, and among both men and women. The African-American community gives Cuomo the strongest support, with 75 percent supporting him to only 19 percent for Nixon, The Times reported.

Nixon has been campaigning with African-American city councilman Jumaane Williams as he running mate. He is challenging Lt. Gov. Kathy Hochul. That race is more competitive than Cuomo and Nixon, the poll suggested.

  • 30 percent favor Hochul.
  • 21 percent favor Williams.
  • 50 percent remain undecided.

The actress and activist is more successful regarding the question of corruption, The Times reported.

  • 45 percent said she would fight against corruption better than Cuomo.
  • 40 percent said Cuomo would be better at going against corruption.

The Siena College poll was conducted between July 22 and July 26 among 630 likely Democratic voters, with a margin of error of plus or minus 3.9 percentage points, The Times reported.

A poll earlier in July also showed Cuomo with a strong lead. Fifty-nine percent of New York voters supported Cuomo over Nixon’s 23 percent in a Quinnipiac University poll published July 18.
