The Anti-Defamation League on Monday called on the Trump administration to provide "authorities and resources to counter domestic terrorism" and white supremacy because "the time for action is now."
"White supremacists committed 39/50 extremist related murders in 2018," the ADL said on Twitter. "The change in @DHSGov rhetoric on this threat is welcome, but the 'strategic framework' lacks new authorities and resources to counter domestic terrorism.
"The time for action is now," the organization said.
The ADL's tweet included a link to a HuffPost article on a Department of Homeland Security report released Friday about the threats posed by an explosion in white-supremacist acts, fueled by the internet.
The agency's 37-page report, "The Strategic Framework for Countering Terrorism and Targeted Violence," warned that potential domestic terrorists can easily network through the internet and drew parallels to foreign jihadists.
"Similar to how ISIS inspired and connected with potential radical Islamist terrorists, white supremacist violent extremists connect with like-minded individuals online," the report said.
Acting DHS Secretary Kevin McAleenan last week called white supremacist extremism "one of the most potent ideologies driving acts of targeted violence in this country."
"In our modern age," he said at the Brookings Institution in Washington, "the continued menace of racially based violent extremism, particularly white supremacist extremism, is an abhorrent affront to our nation, the struggle and unity of its diverse population, and the core values of both our society and our department."
