Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., had a fiery response to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., yielding to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., on a Senate Border funding bill that provides care for migrant refugees detained at the southern border.
"Under no circumstances should the House vote for a McConnell-only bill w/ no negotiation with Democrats. Hell no," the 29-year-old New York congresswoman tweeted about the Senate version of the bill.
"That's an abdication of power we should refuse to accept. They will keep hurting kids if we do."
The bill, which passed 84-4 in the Senate and 305-102 in the House, approves $4.5 billion in aid for the growing crisis along the U.S. southern border.
Dozens of liberal Democrats opposed the bill, reluctantly brought to a vote by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., after her plan to further strengthen rules for the treatment of migrant refugees ran into intractable opposition from Republicans and Vice President Mike Pence.
Ocasio-Cortez later told CNN the legislation lacks humanitarian provisions.
"I do not believe we should be throwing more money to ICE," Ocasio-Cortez told Jake Tapper on "The Lead."
"My district is 50% immigrant. I have an obligation and responsibility to protect them. I believe what we should ideally be doing is passing a pure humanitarian bill to get money straight to the kids."
"We need to make sure these kids are protected as well as making sure we having their resources funded," she added.
