Arnold Schwarzenegger underwent open heart surgery on Thursday after a routine operation to replace a heart valve ran into complications, TMZ reports.
The 70-year-old action star and former California governor entered Cedars-Sinai Medical Center for a catheter valve replacement, but TMZ said the surgery performed was "somewhat experimental" and complications ensued.
"Doctors were prepared in case the catheter valve replacement failed ... and quickly decided Arnold needed emergency open-heart surgery, which we're told lasted several hours," TMZ said.
Schwarzenegger was listed in stable condition following the operation, according to TMZ.
"The Terminator" star has gone under the knife for a heart procedure before — having an aortic valve replaced in 1997.
He served two terms as the 38th Governor of California from 2003 to 2011.
