Ousted Attorney General Jeff Sessions does not appear to be considering a run for his old Senate seat, according to what he said in a new interview.

Speaking with Politico on Capitol Hill after Wednesday's state funeral for former President George H.W. Bush, the former AG said he is heading back to Alabama to spend time with his family.

"I've been clearing my brain – I think that's a fair statement," said the 71-year-old Sessions, who was fired the day after last month's midterm elections. "I'll go to Alabama, do some things, and then that will clarify things a little more before I worry about making a statement."

When asked if he misses serving in the Senate chamber, which he did from 1997-2017, Sessions was direct.

"No, I mean, no," he said. "I could go back and spend time in the woods. I've got 10 grandchildren, oldest is 11."

Sen. Doug Jones, D-Ala., won the special election to replace Sessions one year ago. He will be up for reelection in 2020.
