Ninety percent of registered voters are in favor of requiring criminal background checks on all gun buyers, while 81% say they would favor allowing police to temporarily take guns away from people who have been shown to be a danger to themselves or others, according to a Fox News poll released Wednesday.

Additionally, 67% are in favor of banning assault rifles and semi-automatic weapons – up from 60% in 2018. Democrats, though, sit at 86%, while Republicans split 46-46% on a ban.

The poll was conducted Aug. 11-13, about a week after mass shootings in El Paso, Texas and Dayton, Ohio left 31 people dead and dozens more injured.

The poll also found:

  • 35% of voters say lack of gun laws and access to guns is a reason mass shooting happen more often in the United States than other countries.
  • 42% say the federal government can do a great deal to reduce gun violence in the U.S.
  • 42% believe it is not at all likely Congress will pass gun legislation this year.
  • 71% think the U.S. government has the ability to reduce gun violence.
  • 37% approve of President Donald Trump’s response to the shootings.
  • 46% think the Trump administration has made the country less safe from mass shootings.
