Baltimore Mayor to Trump: Send Aid, Not Insults

(CNN's "New Day")

Baltimore Mayor Bernard "Jack" Young on Monday called on President Donald Trump to help his city and others rather than to launch attacks on their conditions through "childish tweets."

"If he really wants to, he needs to send us the federal assistance, not only to Baltimore, to cities around this country that are in the same situation that Baltimore is in," Young told CNN's "New Day," in comments two days after the president attacked the city in a series of tweets by calling parts of it a "disgusting, rat and rodent infested mess."

His tweets were included in attacks against House Oversight Committee Chairman Elijah Cummings, D-Md., who represents part of the city of Baltimore, after the veteran African-American congressman last week slammed conditions at the nation's border.

"I mean if you want to help us, help us," Young, a Democrat, told CNN's John Berman. "Don't talk about it. Send the resources we need to rebuild America. He's talking about [how] he wants to 'make America great again.' Put the money in the cities that need it the most and that way you can make America great again."

Young became mayor in May after Catherine Pugh stepped down because of a book deal investigation. He complained Monday that Trump hasn't reached out to him since he took office.

Trump tweeted that when the city's leaders want to see it "rise again," he is in a "very beautiful oval shaped office waiting for your call!"
