President Barack Obama's approval rating is as good as it was at the time of his second inauguration, according to a new poll.

The NBC News/Wall Street Journal survey finds Obama's job approval to be at 51 percent among registered voters, as opposed to the 46 percent who disapprove of the job he's doing in the White House.

The last time Obama cracked the 50-percent barrier in this particular poll was in January 2013, at the start of his second term in office. Ahead of the 2014 midterm elections, Obama's approval figure had dropped to 40 percent.

Obama's approval ratings by political party in the NBC/WSJ poll:
  • 88 percent of Democrats
  • 8 percent of Republicans
  • 54 percent of independents
The latest Gallup figures put Obama's approval rating at 50 percent.
