Senate Republicans will confirm President Donald Trump's judicial nominees with or without Sen. Jeff Flake, Sen. John Barrasso said Thursday.
"This seems to be his go-to play right now, threatening judges," the Wyoming Republican, who has been voted to be the next chairman of the Senate Republican Conference, told Fox News' "America's Newsroom." "He did it this past summer on tariffs and trade. Now he is doing it in terms of the issue of special counsel. There is no threat to the special counsel. We are going to get these judges confirmed."
During a speech on the Senate floor Wednesday Flake said he'll use his vote in the Senate Judiciary Committee to oppose the nomination of more than four dozen judges, meaning the nominees will not make it to the Senate floor without a vote from a Democrat.
Barrasso said the legislation to protect Mueller isn't needed, but he does think the special counsel should get his investigation wrapped up soon.
"Now you see [Senate Minority Leader] Chuck Schumer threatening a shutdown of the government over this," said Barrasso. "This isn't what the American people want."
Barrasso said with his new position in the Senate, he will be one who wants to legislate, even if the Democratic-controlled house and potential Speaker Nancy Pelosi want to spend their time investigating the Trump administration.
"They won't get cooperation from us," said Barrasso. " The American people want us to work together, get results and solutions, lasting solutions to make lives better for people at home. That's what I'm committed to doing."
