Popular ice cream maker Ben & Jerry's co-founder Ben Cohen has made on his own initiative a flavor of ice cream in honor of Vermont senator and Democrat presidential candidate Bernie Sanders.
Cohen wrote on a
website he runs that he and fellow ice cream mogul Jerry Greenfield "have been constituents of Bernie Sanders for the last 30 years. We've seen him in action and we believe in him.
"When we're out speaking on his behalf people always ask if there's a Ben and Jerry's flavor. There's not. But if I were going to come up with one, this is what it would be."
Mint and chocolate are apparently the official flavors of U.S. democratic socialism.
The Sanders' ice cream is described on the carton:
"The entire top of this pint is covered with a thick disc of solid chocolate. Underneath is plain mint ice cream."
Cohen says he made 40 pints "in my kitchen" and donated 25 of them to the Sanders campaign.
He also announced a contest would be held in which the winners would receive a pint of the limited-edition ice cream, "numbered and signed by its Maker."
Ben & Jerry's is noted for injecting its liberal political leanings into its business efforts. Among many examples are introducing an
"I Dough, I Dough" ice cream flavor to celebrate the Supreme Court decision to legalize same-sex marriage, selling a T-shirt in support of Black Lives Matter's
"Hands Up Don't Shoot" campaign, and creating a
"Save Our Swirl" ice cream in support of global warming awareness.
