President Donald Trump is to blame for stoking “anxiety” at the U.S.-Mexico border, Sen. Ben Cardin, D-Md., said in an interview on CNN’s “New Day” on Monday.
"We are looking at children being subject to tear gas and that's the United States causing that, and that's outrageous," Cardin said, referring to American authorities using tear gas on migrants at the border on Sunday.
According to the senator, the Trump administration is “making the circumstances worse,” with its policies towards migrants attempting to seek asylum.
"There’s a better way to handle this. The United States, the Trump policies has caused anxiety at the border," he continued.
"There's an orderly process that should have been used," the senator said. "Should we fix our immigration system? Absolutely. But this administration has made no effort to fix our immigration system."
Cardin also said in the interview that Trump has helped Russian President Vladimir Putin “weaken the West,” by casting doubt on the country’s commitment to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.
“Putin’s objective is to weaken the West, weaken the Western alliance. So when the president challenges NATO and the commitment to NATO, it's falling right into Mr. Putin's hand by weakening the trans-Atlantic partnership, by weakening the [European Union], weakening NATO,” he said. “All that is part of Putin’s game-plan to strengthen Russia's influence in the region.”
