Ben Carson on Religious Restoration: Defending Law Is 'Absolutely Vital'

By    |   Monday, 30 March 2015 06:34 PM EDT

Almost a month after he told radio host Sean Hannity he was going to stop talking about gay issues, Dr. Ben Carson is weighing in on the Indiana Religious Freedom Restoration Act, which critics say allows for discrimination against homosexuals.

Carson, who is expected to seek the Republican presidential nomination, told Breitbart News  that it is "absolutely vital" for Americans to stand up for the law, recently signed by Republican Gov. Mike Pence, another potential 2016 White House contender.

"It is absolutely vital that we do all we can to allow Americans to practice their religious ways, while simultaneously ensuring that no one’s beliefs infringe upon those of others. We should also serve as champions of freedom of religion throughout the world," Carson said.

"As Americans, we have an obligation to denounce these acts of persecution, for when we stand up to such intolerance, we are defending the root of our freedom, both at home and abroad," he added.

Carson came under fire for saying in a March 4 interview with CNN's Chris Cuomo that homosexuality is a personal choice. He cited prison as an example.

"Because a lot of people who go into prison go into prison straight — and when they come out, they're gay. So, did something happen while they were in there? Ask yourself that question," Carson said to Cuomo.

After an immediate backlash, Carson apologized, saying CNN had edited his taped interview to highlight the issue, which he acknowledged was more complex. He told Hannity he would avoid discussing the issue further with members of the liberal media.

Brietbart News leans conservative.
