Joe Biden got an 11-point bounce in CNN's polling after he officially entered the race for the Democratic presidential nomination, leaving him more than 20 points ahead of his nearest competitor, Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., among Democrats or Democratic-leaning independents, a CNN poll released Tuesday shows.

The poll, conducted by SSRS April 25-28 among a random national sample of 1,007 adults, put the former vice president at 39%, up from 28% in March.

In comparison:

  • Sanders netted 15%
  • Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., 8%
  • Pete Buttigieg, 7%
  • Beto O'Rourke, 6%
  • Sen. Kamala Harris, D-Calif., 5%
  • The remaining 17 candidates all got 2% or less in the poll

Buttigieg was the only other candidate to climb significantly in the ratings since March, going up by six points. The South Bend, Ind., mayor's favorably rating also went up from 11% in late January, when he announced his presidential exploratory committee to 38% now that he's in the race.

Meanwhile, 81% of the potential Democratic voters said they hold a favorable view of Biden, marking the same numbers as when CNN polled on his favorability in December.

Biden led among almost all major political and demographic political groups:

  • Under age 45: 31% Biden to 19% Sanders
  • Liberals: Biden, 32%; Sanders, 19%
  • Whites: Biden, 29%; Sanders, 15%

However, 64% of potential voters said they could still change their minds, but 36% said they'll definitely back the candidate they now support. Of those who are locked in, 50% say they'll pick Biden; 21% picked Sanders, and 8% picked Warren.
