Sen. Bernie Sanders and his wife have hired lawyers amid a Justice Department investigation that the Vermont independent might have used his political influence to help Jane Sanders obtain a $10 million loan for the now-defunct Burlington College when she was president.
The Sanders have retained Rich Cassidy, a top attorney in Burlington, Vt., and Sanders supporter, and noted Washington defense lawyer Larry Robbins, Politico reports.
The hires were confirmed by longtime Sanders aide Jeff Weaver, according to the report.
The investigation stemmed from a complaint made in January 2016 alleging that Jane Sanders commingled donor numbers on a 2010 loan application for $10 million to expand Burlington College.
She was president from 2004 to 2011.
Burlington College closed in May 2016 after failing accreditation requirements and becoming bankrupt, Politico reports.
Brady Toensing, a state chairman for the Trump campaign, filed the complaint to the U.S. attorney for Vermont.
"The investigation was started more than a year ago under President [Barack] Obama, his Attorney General Loretta Lynch, and his United States Attorney, all of whom are Democrats," Toensing told Politico.
