The editor in chief of Vanity Fair is defending its recent cover that depicted Democratic presidential candidate Beto O'Rourke, noting the former congressman actually said what was printed.
In recent days, O'Rourke has backpedaled on his "born to be in it" remark, saying it showed white privilege. Radhika Jones, who has led the magazine since December 2017, pushed back on the Texan's comments.
"I'm really proud of it, I'm proud that we got it, and I'm proud that it's still driving conversation," Jones told CNN of the March cover.
"I mean, he did say it. And I have felt actually it is clear what he meant, and I'd also say a lot of people have interpreted this cover differently. That's always the case with covers, I find."
O'Rourke is far down in 2020 election polling, garnering 4.2% support in the RealClearPolitics polling average. Former Vice President Joe Biden leads with 39.8% support.
