Biden: Executive Actions Coming In Wake of Gun Bill Defeat

By    |   Thursday, 18 April 2013 04:29 PM EDT

President Barack Obama will be issuing executive orders as early as this week after the Senate failed to pass gun control legislation backed by the White House, Vice President Joe Biden told a group of supporters Thursday.

In a conference call with gun control advocates, Biden said that stricter laws would eventually be passed, but that in the meantime Obama will be using his executive powers, BuzzFeed reported. Though the media wasn’t invited to participate in the call, the website said it had access through a participant.

Obama alluded to executive orders in his speech on Wednesday in which he angrily denounced the opposition, whom he accused of lying about the bill’s intent.

"Look, I know you're going to say that I'm just being an optimist and I'm trying to put a good face on this,” Biden said in the conference call. “But, you know, I've been around here a long time and we've already done, because of you, some really good things. No. 1, the president is already lining up some additional executive actions he's going to be taking later this week."

Biden mentioned helping schools obtain resource officers and getting funding for teachers to help recognize students who might be at risk of becoming violent.

The White House later clarified to BuzzFeed that Biden was referring to executive orders that Obama had mentioned in January and not any new actions.
