Vice President Joe Biden will not end up running for the Democratic nomination for president, former Democratic National Committee Chairman Ed Rendell said Sunday.

"No one knows what Joe Biden’s going to do," Rendell said Sunday on "The Cats Roundtable" on AM 970 in New York. "I think in the end he won't [run.]"

Biden is "genuinely torn" and doesn't know if he can emotionally handle it after the death of his son, Beau, in May, Rendell told host John Catsimatidis.

"I think in the end he won't, because if you look at the polls in every significant state, he's in third place slightly behind Bernie Sanders and significantly behind Hillary Clinton," Rendell said. "The only way he can catch up, since he and Hillary basically agree on the same issues … is to attack her personally. And I don't think he wants to do that."

Biden and Clinton were good friends when Clinton served as secretary of state during the first term of President Barack Obama, he said.

"So in the end, I think, Joe is not going to run, and Hillary Clinton will be the nominee," he said.
