Bill Gates issued a subtle warning to big tech against the kind of hubris or arrogance that could invite government intervention, the billionaire and global philanthropist told Axios.

The Microsoft co-founder said it's better to accept a certain level of oversight than to resist and invite something far more intrusive.

"The tech companies have to be. . . careful that they're not trying to think their view is more important than the government's view, or than the government being able to function in some key areas," Gates told Axios.

An example:

Gates singled out big tech's "enthusiasm about making financial transactions anonymous and invisible, and their view that even a clear mass-murdering criminal's communication should never be available to the government.

"There's no question of ability; it's the question of willingness," Gates told Axios in a direct question about unlocking the iPhone of a killer as part of an investigation.
