President Donald Trump's lead lawyer in the Russia investigation, John Dowd, quit Thursday because "Joe diGenova is going to take the lead," Bill O'Reilly told Newsmax TV.

"So, Dowd stepped out," he told "Newsmax Now" host Miranda Khan in an interview.

Trump hired diGenova, a former U.S. attorney for the District of Columbia, on Monday.

"DiGenova is aggressive, good with the media, will probably do more PR than Dowd did," O'Reilly told Khan.

"That's needed, if the president wants to keep his image intact with his base. He doesn't want his base to erode."

O'Reilly explained: "Pretty much, Americans are set on Donald Trump, good or bad.

"But diGenova is a pretty tough guy, knows the area," he added. "So, he's, basically, replacing Dowd as head counsel."
