Weekend comments from President Donald Trump's attorney, Rudy Giuliani, in connection to Trump Tower Moscow could point to illegal activity if the president lied about the conversations under oath, Sen. Richard Blumenthal claimed Tuesday.

The Connecticut Democrat also told CNN's "New Day" that Giuliani's comments that talks about the Moscow project went on up until the election "smacks of illicit negotiations and dealings with an adversary, with (Vladimir) Putin's henchmen."

“The fact is Putin had something on him, which may be the reason why he issued a statement about the Trump Tower meeting that was plainly false, why (Donald) Trump Jr.’s testimony may well be false insofar as he is saying, didn’t tell my father," Blumenthal said.

The "important point" is that special counsel Robert Mueller's report be released, said Blumenthal.

"Lying to the American people may not be itself breaking the law, but if it’s part of a conspiracy, part of aiding and abetting other illicit actions, we need to see the full special counsel report and all that he knows," said Blumenthal.

Mueller, he added, "knows more than we do. . . lying to American people is reprehensible and irresponsible, but it shows that Putin had something on him at a time when the American people needed to know the truth and now more than ever we need it from the special counsel."

Blumenthal said he also believes Trump can be indicted, even though other legal opinions say he can't, but he still wants to see all of the evidence so "we know the factual basis for what any indictment might be."
