Louisiana Republican Gov. Bobby Jindal says that Vice President Joe Biden needs to apologize to Arkansas Republican Sen. Tom Cotton for the comments he has made about the letter sent to Iran by Republican senators.
Jindal wrote on his official Twitter account:
Led by U.S. Army veteran and freshman Sen. Cotton,
47 Republican senators sent a letter to Iranian government officials saying that even if the Middle Eastern country strikes a deal with President Barack Obama, it will be short lived without congressional approval.
The letter included signatures from Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and presidential hopefuls Sens. Rand Paul of Kentucky, Ted Cruz of Texas and Marco Rubio of Florida.
Biden strongly criticized the letter in a statement saying that the letter is designed to "undercut our president and circumvent our constitutional system offends me as a matter of principle."
He said that "in thirty-six years in the United States Senate, I cannot recall another instance in which senators wrote directly to advise another country — much less a longtime foreign adversary — that the president does not have the constitutional authority to reach a meaningful understanding with them."
In addition,
Biden wrote Monday that "this letter, in the guise of a constitutional lesson, ignores two centuries of precedent and threatens to undermine the ability of any future American president, whether Democrat or Republican, to negotiate with other nations on behalf of the United States."
Before calling on Biden to apologize, Jindal tweeted his support for the letter:
