U.S. Border Patrol apprehended nearly 400,000 people crossing the border between legal ports of entry on the Southwest Border in Fiscal Year 2018, U.S. Customs and Border Protection announced on Tuesday.
According to data released by CBP, 521,090 people were apprehended illegally crossing, or deemed inadmissible upon arriving at, the Southwest Border. Of those people, 396,579 were apprehended at the border, including 50,036 unaccompanied children and 107,212 in family units.
The Office of Field Operations deemed 124,511 people inadmissible upon presenting themselves at ports of entry along the border - 8,624 of them were unaccompanied children and 53,901 were in family units.
According to the report, “OFO inadmissibility metrics include: individuals encountered at ports of entry who are seeking lawful admission into the United States but are determined to be inadmissible, individuals presenting themselves to seek humanitarian protection under our laws; and individuals who withdraw an application for admission and return to their countries of origin within a short timeframe.”
In Fiscal Year 2017, the Border Patrol apprehended just over 300,000 along the U.S.-Mexico border, and deemed just over 100,000 inadmissible.
