The secretary of the Army admitted Thursday that regardless of what happens with the thousands of troops deployed at the southern border, at least they're getting in some good training.

"When you look at the mix of the forces going there, it's logistics and aviation and engineers and I will tell you … they're getting training out of that," Mark Esper said at the American Enterprise Institute, according to The Hill.

"They are deploying. They are putting their equipment on trains and whatnot or convoying and they are deploying to a location and they are offloading and, in many cases, these troops are performing the missions that they were designed to perform."

More than 5,000 troops are already at the border to shore up America's defenses as several caravans of migrants make their way through Mexico, with the goal of entering the U.S. President Donald Trump ordered the Pentagon to send the troops to help U.S. Border Patrol agents.

The Pentagon is expected to have more than 7,000 troops at the border in the coming weeks.
