The only sections of border barrier that have been installed between the United States and Mexico under President Donald Trump are 51 miles of replacement walls, not new sections, the government confirmed.
According to the Washington Examiner, U.S. Customs and Border Protection said the fencing that's been installed was marked as replacement for older barriers during fiscal years 2017 and 2018. Money has been set aside for new barriers, but none of those projects have been completed.
One senior official in the Trump administration told the Examiner that it's quicker to replace existing barriers rather than build new ones because the process for obtaining permits is faster.
Trump's signature promise during the 2016 campaign was to build a wall between the U.S. and Mexico. There are currently around 700 miles of border barrier along the 2,000-mile border.
In March, the U.S. government awarded a $42.8 million contract to build three miles of wall in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas.
