Just hours before he is scheduled to give the State of the Union address in which his proposed wall on the southern border is expected to be one of the topics, President Donald Trump sent out a tweet on the issue.
“Tremendous numbers of people are coming up through Mexico in the hopes of flooding our Southern Border,” Trump wrote on Tuesday. “We have sent additional military. We will build a Human Wall if necessary. If we had a real Wall, this would be a non-event!”
Disagreement over border wall funding led to a record-long partial government shutdown which ended earlier this month after Trump agreed to fund the government for three weeks while Congress tries to reach an agreement on the issue.
Trump has said that if no deal is reached to his satisfaction by Feb. 15, it could lead to another shutdown. He also has threatened to declare a national emergency so as to circumvent Congress and use funds appropriated for other purposes in order to build the wall.
Earlier this week, Trump sent out another tweet on the subject.
“With Caravans marching through Mexico and toward our Country, Republicans must be prepared to do whatever is necessary for STRONG Border Security,” the president wrote. "Dems do nothing. If there is no Wall, there is no Security. Human Trafficking, Drugs and Criminals of all dimensions - KEEP OUT!”
