The girlfriend of British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has been denied entry into the United States, apparently because she traveled to Somaliland last year.
Carrie Symonds, 31, an environmental activist who works for U.S.-based Oceana, visited Somaliland, a region within East Africa's Somalia, last year, the Daily Mail reports.
Multiple media reports says that the trip appears to be the reason why her U.S visitors visa application was denied. She had planned to visit the U.S. for meetings with Oceana.
What is not clear is whether Symonds applied for the visa via the U.S. Electronic System for Travel Authorization. That system, according to the Mail, asks applicants, "Have you traveled to, or been present in Iraq, Syria, Iran, Sudan, Libya, Somalia, or Yemen on or after March 1, 2011?"
The question was added in 2016, and answering yes will result in a denied application.
The situation adds another wrinkle to an already complex situation. Johnson is still married, but he lives with Symonds at the prime minister's residence at 10 Downing Street in London.
Symonds does not have a staff there and is not officially allowed to ask the government to get involved in the diplomatic situation because she and Johnson are not married.
Symonds' Twitter feed contains messages abut environmental causes and animal rights; it does not mention her attempt to obtain a U.S. travel visa.
Johnson took office last month. He has been married twice and divorce proceedings with his current wife Marina Wheeler are ongoing, Express noted.
