Evidence shows brain trauma suffered by at least 40 U.S. diplomats and their families in Cuba and China over the last three years could be the work of a foreign hostile environment, CBS News’ “60 Minutes” reports.
The incidents, which started in late 2016, have seen workers stationed in Havana and China report brain injuries, hearing loss, and problems with cognition, balance, vision, and hearing. The FBI is investigating whether the Americans were attacked by a mysterious weapon that leaves no trace.
Cuba and China have both denied any role – Russia is also a suspect according to intelligence sources who spoke with CBS News – and the FBI has yet to publicly announce results of its investigation.
Mark Lenzi, a State Department security officer who worked in the U.S. Consulate in Guangzhou, China, believes he was directly targeted by an energy weapon – RF, or radio frequency energy, in the microwave range.
“This was a directed standoff attack against my apartment,” said Lenzi, who believes he was targeted because he used top secret equipment to analyze electronic threats to diplomatic missions.
A 2014 statement by the National Security Agency supports Lenzi’s theory, describing the weapon as a "high-powered microwave system weapon that may have the ability to weaken, intimidate, or kill an enemy over time without leaving evidence." The weapon, reports CBS "…is designed to bathe a target's living quarters in microwaves."
