Bronny James, the 18-year-old son of NBA basketball icon LeBron James, reportedly was in stable condition after suffering cardiac arrest and collapsing during a workout in Los Angeles.
"Yesterday while practicing, Bronny James suffered a cardiac arrest. Medical staff was able to treat Bronny and take him to the hospital," the James family said in a statement Tuesday, NBC News reports.
The family statement added that Bronny James is "now in stable condition and no longer in ICU. We ask for respect and privacy for the James family and we will update [the] media when there is more information. LeBron and Savannah wish to publicly send their deepest thanks and appreciation to the USC medical and athletic staff for their incredible work and dedication to the safety of their athletes."
Bronny James, LeBron James' oldest son, announced this year that he planned to play basketball at the University of Southern California, where his collapse took place.
He is entering his freshman year at USC, and has been ranked 20th in the 2023 ESPN 100 rankings, reports ESPN. James is also the sixth-rated point guard in the class of 2023.
The Los Angeles Fire Department confirmed that Monday, at 9:29 a.m. PT, it responded to a medical emergency in the 3400 block of South Figueroa Street and transported an adult male to a hospital.
USC basketball's home arena is the Galen Center, located at 3400. S. Figueroa St.
Bronny James' collapse marks the second time in the past year that medical staff at USC had to respond to a men's basketball player suffering a cardiac arrest during practice, The Los Angeles Times reported.
Last summer, center Vince Iwuchukwu collapsed at practice and was revived by USC athletic trainers. He returned to the basketball court six months later.
