Democratic strategist James Carville believes it'll be "very, very difficult" for the party to take back the Senate in 2018.

In an interview aired Sunday with radio host John Catsimatidis on "The Cats Roundtable," the longtime ally of President Bill Clinton said "there's a 50 percent chance that the Democrats win the House."

“I think right now most Democrats are trying to focus on the 2018 elections and trying to recruit people and keep incumbents, and you know I would say we have a pretty good chance of taking the House back," he said.

"The Senate is very, very difficult."

“The problem in the Senate is we have a large number of seats we have to hold in states that [President] Donald Trump carried," he added. "Indiana, Missouri, you know places like that we have to hold seats.

"The only places where we have an opportunity for pick up are, you know, Nevada is pretty good. After that Arizona is less good, then you’re down to Texas and Alabama, and for Democrats to win the Senate back, they have to pick up three seats."

Carville also predicted that in 2020, the number of Democrats making a bid for the White House "will be double digits."

"There will be a number of serious candidates that are going to run on the Democratic side and our party needs that," he said.
