The Vatican announced in a long-awaited ruling on Monday that it opposed sex changes and radical gender theory.
In a declaration termed "Dignitas infinita" or "Infinite Dignity," the Vatican's doctrinal office, the DDF, articulated in a document a stance that, according to the Daily Mail, aligns with conservative views.
"There is no suggestion," the Mail wrote, "that the new text was prepared in direct response to the rows over same-sex blessings, as it has been five years in the making."
Cardinal Victor Manuel Fernandez revealed that the document was said to address issues such as "poverty, the situation of migrants, violence against women, human trafficking, war, and other themes," under the direction of Pope Francis.
Central to the Vatican's discourse is a critique of gender theory, which it contends contradicts Catholic teaching by advocating for gender fluidity and self-determined gender identity. The declaration asserts, "Desiring a personal self-determination, as gender theory prescribes … amounts to a concession to the age-old temptation to make oneself God."
Furthermore, the Vatican voiced its opposition to sex-reassignment procedures, framing such interventions as potential threats to the "unique dignity the person has received from the moment of conception."
However, it distinguishes these from medically necessary surgeries for "genital abnormalities," which it noted "would not constitute a sex change in the sense intended here."
The declaration also reiterates the Church's condemnation of surrogate parenthood, echoing Pope Francis's previous denunciations of the practice as "despicable." In addition, the text reaffirmed the Vatican's opposition to abortion, euthanasia, and the death penalty.
At the same time, the Vatican also condemned the unjust treatment of individuals based on sexual orientation, mentioning that "not a few people are imprisoned, tortured, and even deprived of the good of life solely because of their sexual orientation."
